3GPP stands for 3rd Generation Partnership Project (third generation partner plan). It's official website is: http://www.3gpp.org/. 3GPP was established by Europe's ETSI, Japan's ARIB and TTC, South Korea's TTA, China's CCSA, and the United States' ATIS at the end of 1998.
Its purpose is to establish 3G standard specifications across the GSM core network, they are WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, EDGE etc… China Communications Standards Association (CWTS) also joined 3GPP in 1999.
The primary objective of the 3GPP organization is to ensure a smooth transition from the 2G network to the 3G network ,and to guarantee that future technology is compatible with existing systems. All the vendors must develop their respective solution products in accordance with 3GPP professional release terms.
